Sex, stress and happiness: Canadian women speak out

Posted by: tottaz | Comment (0)
Tagged in: Untagged

They're stressed out and under-sexed, yet overall they are generally happy with life.

Most prefer their doctor to be female, 43% have seen a counselor and 26% have been diagnosed with depression. Who are they? They are the thousands of women from across the country who responded to glow magazine's Healthy Woman Survey.

This Spring, glow conducted its first-ever women's health survey. We wanted to begin a meaningful dialogue with Canadian women, and as Canada's Health Expert, we knew we had a strong base of readers to start that conversation. We were right! Approximately 17,500 women participated, the majority of whom were women from small towns across the country, ages 26 to 46 and married. The data we collected was analyzed by a group of health care professionals including a professor of pharmacy, a clinical counsellor, a gynecologist, a naturopathic doctor and more. The results were intriguing - and have provided us with a new level of insight into Canadian women's health.

Man Up and Date!

Hey guys, it's summer, time to relax and have some fun. (One word: bikini.) Maybe in the past, dating has seemed to you more like a chore or at least a challenge, but trust us, done properly, dating can and should be relaxing and enjoyable.

The following are a few tips from Irene LaCota, President of specialized dating service It's Just Lunch that should get you out there – and successfully dating - this summer:

  • Leave the house! It's time to admit that she isn't going to find you while you're sitting on your couch watching summer reruns, or surfing the online dating sites. Find innovative and unusual places to meet people. Join a club, volunteer or take up a new sport. Summer provides a great opportunity to engage in the outdoor activities that you wouldn't have the chance to do during colder weather.
  • What, are you blind? There are many opportunities throughout your regular day to meet someone. Interesting people are all around us, but most of us are so consumed with our busy lives - or ourselves (you know who you are) - that we rarely take the time to notice. So, while it might take a little practice, look up; consciously try to turn your radar on.
  • Don't smirk, smile! Yeah, yeah, we know - you're a tough guy – but trust us, this works. Whether you are at the clubs or the park, be aware, consider flashing your pearly whites once in a while. Heck, you might even occasionally say hello.
  • Embrace your singledom. Don't you realize how insanely jealous of you your married friends are? Think about it: You have the freedom to do anything you want, mingle and meet everyone you want, and learn new things about yourself and others.
  • But pity the player. Dating is, and should always be, fun. But it is not about playing games with other people, using clever tactics or making sure you come out on top. Seriously -- pick another summer sport. Dating responsibly will make it a more enjoyable and less stressful process for everyone.
  • Own it. Everyone gets nervous, especially when meeting someone for the first time. But have faith in yourself, or at least try to fake it until you make it. Self confidence produces the most amazing results in dating because this positive energy attracts an abundance of people who want to meet them.
  • Earn it. Most people know exactly what they want out of their careers and have a clearly defined set of goals. But when it comes to finding a partner, it's often left to chance. So be proactive. If you really want to find that special someone, make dating as important as your career. Getting out there and meeting new people is the perfect thing to put on your Summer "To Do" list.

Or, better yet, leave it all to the dating specialists at It's Just Lunch! We think lunch, brunch or after-work drinks make great first dates. We'll handle every step - even make reservations at a time and place convenient for both parties - the only work you'll need to do is to show up and enjoy. For more information, go to www.itsjustlunch.com. Now get out there and date!

Canadians use technology to get closer to that special someone

To support the launch of the Motorola Hint QA30, the ultra-sleek black and red handset that allows users to enjoy conversations on a full QWERTY slider keypad, Motorola Canada partnered with Angus Reid Strategies to find out how Canadians are using technology to pass along 'hints' when it comes to making or breaking relationships. Sweaty palms and awkward first calls are now apparently a thing of the past.

According to the survey, relationships often blossom thanks to technology. Two in five (42%) of Canadians aged 18-34 would send a flirtatious text to hint they have a crush. Youth are also significantly more inclined to flirt with their crush using Facebook wall posts or gifts (35%) and instant messaging (32%). On the other hand, just over one in ten Canadians aged 55+ would use Facebook (15%) and instant messaging (12%).

Surprisingly, a full 10 per cent of Canadians would give someone the hint that their relationship is over by changing their Facebook status. When it comes to breaking up the old fashioned way, 35 per cent of Canadians would choose to break up with someone over the phone or in person and only 10 per cent would opt not to use technology to get this message across.

Spring Literally Blooms Love

Posted by: tottaz | Comment (0)
Tagged in: Untagged

There is something in the spring air – its not quite the scent of flower buds, it’s people connecting as relationships flourish and love blooms. “According to research published in the Journal of Reproductive Rhythms, humans are biologically programmed to seek out mates during the springtime. This is the result of warmer temperatures and longer, sunnier days,” says Dr. Laura Zilney, Clinical Sexologist and Author.1 Whether it’s a first date or an evening without the kids, take hold of spring fever and plan an intimate evening for two.

  1. Love is literally in the air – “The change in weather actually makes people feel better, which in turn increases their ability to reproduce,” says Zilney. “Like other animals, such as fish, birds and some mammals, human sexuality varies by season and has been linked to climatic factors, especially temperatures between 10 and 21 degrees Celsius (50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit) and sunlight of 12 hours per day.”2 Spring is about rebirth, so take the opportunity that nature has provided and find or renew romance.
  2. Feast on aphrodisiac foods – Chocolate, vanilla and oysters may be classic aphrodisiac ingredients, but oily fish like salmon and tuna can also help set the mood. Packed with phosphorus, calcium, vitamins A, B and D — these nutrients are reportedly essential for aphrodisiac properties. Zilney adds, the more vitamin D we consume through the sun and the psychological benefits we receive through feeling the warm air on our skin, helps stimulate our sensuality. So spice up your life with good food, fresh air and physical activity, and incorporate foods reputed to have aphrodisiac properties into romantic meals for two. Impress your loved one with Salmon and Rice Stuffed Pastry with Dill Sauce. Create a restaurant-like experience with this crispy puffed pastry stuffed with fresh salmon, rice, herbs, spinach and earthy mushrooms. Topped with a silky, creamy dill sauce this elegant dish will get you in the mood.
  3. Eat with your hands – Set your “table” on the floor with oversize cushions, candles and luscious linens. Select an easy, exotic recipe, like Asian-inspiredMango Beef and Rice Lettuce Wraps. Leftover rice, spicy beef and sweet, juicy mango enveloped in a crispy Boston lettuce leaf offers a fun and light-hearted approach to eating – no utensils required. A healthy and satiating dinner for two, these wraps are as fun to assemble as they are to eat.
  4. Select ingredients to boost your mood and give you energy – Rice is a perfect dinner for two ingredient; inexpensive and found right in your pantry at home. Containing eight essential amino acids, U.S. rice is low in calories, contains no cholesterol, sodium or fat. Brown rice is also a slow burning complex carbohydrate, providing long lasting energy! Rice also holds mood enhancing properties. The brain and nervous system rely on carbohydrates for energy. In addition, carbohydrates such as rice enhance the synthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is the brain chemical that regulates mood and controls appetite.
  5. Keep it simple – Select simple, yet impressive recipes to keep your kitchen time to a minimum, while giving you more time with your loved one. Find recipes made specifically for two, so you’re not making more than you need. Review your recipe in advance and prepare ingredients ahead of time.

For these and more than 90 additional rice recipes, covering every meal of the day, as well as preparation methods, storage tips and nutritional information, please visit the USA Rice Federation web site at www.riceinfo.com.

Anastasia International Turns 15

Posted by: tottaz | Comment (0)
Tagged in: Untagged

It all started in March 1993 with 3 Americans, a Canadian, 2 Englishmen, a Swede and a Japanese gentleman recruited from ads in the New York Times and International Herald Tribune. With their hearts in their throats and a fistful of rubles, their commercial Aeroflot flight landed in Moscow for a meeting with destiny, a prospective brides social attended by 45 Russian women and organized by a fledgling dating service calling itself Anastasia.

Russian women had long been noted for their ravishing beauty and distinct charm. So at a time when international dating, let alone long distance relationships, were scarce and precarious propositions, Anastasia,
co-owned by Russian and American interests, saw a niche and was giving love in Russia a shot.

As The Iron Curtain came down, a flood of western influence and post-Soviet culture swept past each other in a rush towards assimilation. With it, came the admiring glances and open minds of those eager for something different...a taste of the exotic, a break with the past, a different life anchored by an international romantic concept that mixed tradition with modern love.
